What is Functional Urology?
Functional Urology deals with disorders related to the bladder, voiding and the pelvic floor. These are common, often under-recognised problems that can significantly affect quality of life. A proper assessment makes it possible to identify the cause of the symptoms and design an individualised treatment plan.

Common disorders
Urinary incontinence
Involuntary loss of urine that can have different causes and degrees of severity. There are different types — stress, urgency or mixed — and management depends on an individualised assessment.
Overactive bladder
Characterised by an urgent need to urinate, often with increased urinary frequency and, in some cases, leakage. It can be related to involuntary activity of the bladder muscle.
Recurrent urinary tract infections
When urinary tract infections occur repeatedly, it is important to study the factors that may be contributing to them in order to plan an appropriate approach.
Bladder pain syndrome
A condition characterised by pelvic or bladder pain associated with urinary symptoms, without necessarily an active infection. Its diagnosis and management require a specific approach.
Voiding dysfunction
Includes difficulty starting urination, a weak or intermittent stream, or a sensation of incomplete emptying, among other symptoms that should be assessed individually.
Pelvic floor
The pelvic floor muscles play a role in urinary control, sexual function and support of the pelvic organs. Their assessment is relevant in many functional disorders.
Pelvic organ prolapse
Descent of one or more pelvic organs that may be associated with urinary and pelvic floor symptoms, and which requires a specific assessment to guide treatment.
